The Chase Freedom Flex is a no-annual-fee card built around rotating 5% cash-back categories that change every quarter — a genuinely strong return if you remember to activate each quarter and your spending happens to land in whatever’s currently bonused. Like the Freedom Unlimited, its rewards become full-value transferable points when paired with a Sapphire card.

Welcome Offer $200 bonus after meeting a minimum spend requirement
Rewards Currency Chase Ultimate Rewards points (redeemable as cash back)
Complimentary Elite Status None

Terms current as of this writing (July 2026). Like the Freedom Unlimited, this card doesn’t include any complimentary hotel or rental car elite status — those benefits are reserved for Chase’s premium annual-fee cards.

Q3 2026’s categories are gas stations, EV charging, public transit, select live entertainment, and United Way donations — a genuinely useful spread for summer road trips, but only if you remember to activate before the quarter’s cutoff date.

Earning Rates

  • 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined quarterly rotating categories (requires activation)
  • 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 3% cash back on dining, including takeout and eligible delivery
  • 3% cash back at drugstores
  • 1% cash back on everything else

How Rotating Categories Actually Work

Each quarter, Chase announces new bonus categories, and you have to actively activate them — either through the Chase app, website, or by phone — before the quarter’s cutoff date, typically a couple weeks before the quarter ends. Without activation, those categories earn only the base 1% rate. The 5% rate applies to the first $1,500 in combined spending across that quarter’s categories; anything beyond that drops to 1% for the rest of the quarter.

Recent categories have included dining, Amazon, Whole Foods, cruise lines, and charitable donation categories, alongside more traditional ones like gas and groceries — worth checking each quarter rather than assuming the categories will match your typical spending.

Other Benefits

What’s Included
  • No annual fee
  • Points never expire as long as the account stays open
  • A long introductory 0% APR window on purchases and balance transfers
  • Redemption flexibility — statement credit, direct deposit, gift cards, or travel

Who This Card Is For

You’re willing to activate categories every quarter
A genuine shot at above-average earning for zero annual fee, as long as you remember the quarterly activation step.
Your spending matches typical rotating categories
Gas, groceries, and dining show up often in the rotation — if that’s already where your money goes, the 5% rate can add up fast.
You already hold a Sapphire card
Pairing this with a Sapphire Preferred or Reserve turns its cash back into full-value transferable Ultimate Rewards points instead of a flat statement credit.
You want a second no-fee card, not a first
The quarterly tracking makes this a better fit once you’re already comfortable managing rewards cards, rather than the simplest possible starting point.

Worth considering the Chase Freedom Unlimited instead if you’d rather not track quarterly activations and prefer a simpler flat rate on non-bonus spending.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to activate the rotating categories every quarter?

Yes. Without activating, purchases in that quarter’s bonus categories earn only the base 1% rate instead of 5%. Chase typically opens activation a few weeks before each quarter begins.

Is there a cap on the 5% rotating categories?

Yes — the 5% rate applies to the first $1,500 in combined category spending per quarter, after which it drops to 1% for the remainder of that quarter.

Can I transfer points to airlines with this card alone?

No — like the Freedom Unlimited, transferring to airline and hotel partners requires also holding a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve card.
